Brasilia, 32 years of urban expansion

Google Earth Engine has released new data for their project Timelapse, which combines over 5 million satellite images acquired over the past three decades and allows for a zoomable video of land transformations at a global scale. You can play around  procrastinate  on their website zooming in different areas. I find Dubai and Las Vegas particularly interesting. There is a good playlist on Youtube!

This is the timelapse of Brasilia (Federal District), my hometown. During this period between 1984 and 2016, the population of Brasilia went from approx. 1.2 million to 2.9 million. The video shows some very interesting transformations including the expansion of poor settlements largely undeserved by urban infra-structure in the south and southwest of the city, but also some illegal occupations of protected areas by middle- and high-income gated communities in the east and north-east parts of the city.

Dubai at High Speed

Rob Whitworth is among the most prominent film makers and with some of the most amazing time lapse videos. I first got to know Rob's work thanks to Aaron Renn, who gathers a great collection of time lapse videos on his website, The Urbanophile.

I try to follow Rob's work since I watched his great video on the frenetic traffic in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) in 2011, one of my favorites.

Since then, Rob has made some beautiful videos of Shanghai, Barcelona, Kuala Lampur and ! Pyongyang, in North Korea. More recently, he came up with a stunning video of Dubai at high speed. Best viewed full screen and in high definition.

An Overlay of Times and Spaces in Boston

We have seen a few time-lapse videos in this blog before but this one is different. The photographer Julian Tryba overlays different footages at different times of the day to create what she calls a 'Layer-Lapse'. Check her Boston Layer-Lapse.

Olympic transformations in Rio

A different Time-lapse showing some of the urban transformations going on in the city center of Rio due the Olympic Games of 2016. In this case, the video shows the implosion of an urban highway in Rio. There are other official videos documenting this and other investments in Rio here.

off-topic: An instagram short film

It's been a while since I don't post any time-lapse videos. But this video here is special because it takes the time-lapse idea in reverse. Instead of taking sparse pictures of one same scene, it takes instagram pictures taken by different people in separate moments and gathers them as if they were one single scene. Nice work by Thomas Jullien (ht Felipe Seigman)

Visualizing surface changes over time in every corner on Earth

A while ago we had a few posts with satellites images showing the urban expansion of Phoenix (1989 - 2009), São Paulo (1957-2007) and Las Vegas ( 1984-2009 or 1976-2010)*. Now you may check similiar timelapse satellite videos for many (many!) other places on the planet from 1984 through 2012 (yearly pictures amounting a total of 909 terabytes of data).

Search anywhere here and say thanks to NASA, Google, Time and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
